Shiyingliang Formation

Shiyingliang Fm

Period:
Mesoproterozoic

Age Interval:
Changchengian (Statherian) Ch (12a)

Province:
Qinghai

Type Locality and Naming

North-central Qinghai. The Shiyingliang Formation was named by Wang Yunshan et al. in 1980. The typical section is situated in Shiyingliang (Olongbluk Mountain) in Wulan County, Qinghai Province. Upper-middle formation of Quangji Gr.

Synonym: (石英梁组)

Lithology and Thickness

Lower part is composed of red purple ferruginous siltstone, ferruginous silty claystone intercalated with unstable conglomerate and white gray giant-bedded quartzite. Upper part consists of greenish gray basalt, silty shale, gray and grayish black glauconitic siltstone and quartzose sandstone, which is intercalated with two beds of volcanic rock (or pyroclastic rock) and multilayered glauconite and oolitic hematite. Thickness varies from 150 to 395 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Siltstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Generally, there is occurrence of basal conglomerate, and the basal part overlies disconformably the underlying Kubaimu Fm (Gubaimu Fm)

Upper contact

The top conformably underlies the Hongzaoshan Fm

Regional extent

North-central Qinghai. The Shiyingliang Formation is dominantly distributed in Olongbluk Mountain, Quanji Mountain, Shihui valley and Annanba (in north fringe of Qaidam Basin) in Qinghai Province.

Fossils

The microclastic rock yields microplants: Trematosphaeridium sp., Protosphaeridium sp., Orygmatosphaeridium cf. rubiginosum, O. sp., Taeniatum crassum, T. sp., Lignum sp., Laminarites sp. etc.

Age

An (Rb-Sr whole rock) age of 731 Ma was acquired from the ferruginous siltstone near the bottom, and a K-Ar whole rock age of 700 Ma is from a basaltic intercalation. In addition, K-Ar glauconite dates from the sandstone and siltstone of the middle to upper part include 698 Ma and 709 Ma (Wang Yunshan, 1980, 1987). [Note: see entry for the overlying Heitupo Fm, which is presumed coeval to ca. 1300 Ma dated tuffs in south margin of North China Block.] Therefore, until this conflict in dating is resolved, the schematic stratigraphic column had assigned as late Statherian, used here.]
